What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation is an all-inclusive process that tests the various aspects of your thinking and reasoning abilities, including memory, attention, problem-solving, language, visual-spatial, and executive functioning.  It also involves testing to evaluate psychological functioning, including depression, anxiety, and more.

Do you take insurance?

Yes, and we are currently working to become in-network with additional insurance companies. You can return to our website or call our office for updates.

We currently participate, in-network, with the following insurance providers:

  • Medicare
  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield: All Commercial and Medicare plans, including Highmark, Horizon, FEP, BlueCard and most other Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans (*Note: We are NOT in-network with Keystone 1st Medicaid)
  • Aetna: All Commercial and Medicare plans (*Note: We are NOT in-network with Aetna Better Health Medicaid*)
  • United Healthcare: All Commercial and Medicare plans (Note: We are NOT in-network with Oxford Health via United Healthcare or United Healthcare Community Plans/Medicaid)
  • UMR

*HUMANA MEDICARE / HUMANA TRICARE UPDATE: We are currently having contracting issues with Humana Medicare plans and we are attempting to contract with Humana TriCare.

– We were previously in-network with Humana Medicare; however, we are not currently in-network with most of their plans.  We are working with them to fix the problem, but this process can take months to rectify.

– We have been trying to contract with Humana TriCare without success.

We will continue working to become in-network with all Humana Medicare plans and with Humana TriCare.  ***Please note that SOME patients, with either insurance company, DO have out-of-network coverage (depending on their plan) and we CAN bill for those patients who will be covered according to their policy.  If you have either Humana Medicare or Humana TriCare, please contact your insurer to see if you have out-of-network coverage prior to calling our office.  (updated June 2024)

If we are NOT in-network with your insurance company, and you do NOT have out-of-network coverage, you will have to pay for the testing UP-FRONT (no exceptions).  We take cash, check and credit cards* (*may contain a processing fee).  We will provide you with a detailed receipt, containing procedure and diagnosis codes, so that you can submit a claim to your insurance company for reimbursement (if applicable, contact your insurer to inquire about out-of-network coverage).

Although our office may be in-network with your insurance provider, that does not guarantee coverage or payment.  Terms of individual policies can vary significantly, even within a particular insurance program.  If your policy has a deductible, co-insurance and/or a co-pay, any (or all) may apply.  It is, therefore, ultimately your responsibility to contact your insurance company to understand exactly what your insurance covers and the requirements specific to your policy (co-pays, deductibles, referrals, limitations of benefits, etc.).  If you need help understanding your coverage, please contact our office and someone will be happy to explain it to you.

~

Our office will contact your insurance company to determine if you will owe anything out-of-pocket and we will communicate this to you. You will be notified, by phone, of any financial responsibility PRIOR to the beginning of your testing (a message may be left).  However, be aware that this is a good faith estimate based on what your insurance company tells us and we are not responsible for any misinformation provided to us by your insurance carrier.  If your insurance company processes your claims differently than we were quoted, it will be your responsibility to contact your insurance company and rectify the matter.

~

We do NOT accept Medicaid/Medical Assistance plans, including Keystone First, United Healthcare Community Plans, Aetna Better Health, or CHIP.  We do NOT bill car insurance companies or Workman’s Comp.  We do NOT participate with EAP programs.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept personal checks, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover Card. You can pay by phone, in-person or through a Quickbooks/Intuit invoice which can be emailed to you. If paying out of pocket, either due to lack of insurance or a high deductible, payment is required at the time of your first visit.

Do I need a referral?

HMO plans require a referral, except for Keystone 65, as of 2018. However, most other Keystone plans do require a referral.
Most private PPO/POS insurance plans do not require a referral. However, some POS plans, and some employer-sponsored health plans, have unique policy guidelines that may require a referral or prior authorization. Our office can provide you with the procedure codes we use so that you can check with your insurance. We will contact your primary doctor’s office to request the referral, ourselves.

Do you handle Workman’s Comp, personal injury lawsuits or cases involved in any type of litigation?

No. We do not handle Workman’s Comp or any cases in which there is pending litigation.
We do not bill car insurance companies.

How can I prepare for my first appointment?

In addition to providing us with the contact information we need to collect your medical history, there are a few intake forms and questionnaires that you can fill out ahead of time. They can all be found HERE  or under the “FORMS” tab at the top of the page.
Also, you will need to be able to hear and see as best as possible. So, please remember to bring glasses, contacts and/or hearing aids, if you use them, to each appointment.
Finally, you are required to bring your Insurance ID Card(s) with you to your appointments.

Do you need records sent from my primary and/or referring doctor(s)?

In most cases, yes. We prefer to obtain your most recent doctor’s notes, lab results and reports from brain scans (MMI/MRA/CT/EEG) prior to your first appointment. We ask that you provide us with your doctor’s contact information. We will contact them, on your behalf, to have them faxed to us.

Who gets a copy of my report?
With your signed consent, your referring doctor will receive a copy of the report. If your referring provider is not your primary care physician (PCP), and you would like a copy sent to them, as well, please let us know. If you require a copy of the report for your files, we will mail one to you. However, you will need to fill out a “Report/Records Request Form”, found HERE to initiate the request.
Your privacy is important to us. Therefore, we will not send the report to anyone other than your referring doctor or PCP unless you specifically request that we do so. You will be asked to sign and fax/email a copy of a signed Authorize to Release Information form. That form can be found HERE or under the “Forms” tab at the top of the page.
To review a copy of our HIPPA policy, please click HERE. It can also be found under the “FORMS” tab at the top of the page.
Can I bring my family to my appointments?

Yes. Please feel free to bring family members to your appointments. Although testing is done one-on-one with the doctor, their input at the time of intake/review of medical history is often very helpful. Additionally, at the feedback appointment, when the doctor is reviewing your testing results and his recommendations, it is often a good idea to have someone else there for support and to help you remember what was discussed. Family and friends are often an important part of the treatment process. So, having your family or friends there to support you can be very beneficial.
**Please note that children under the age of 10 are not allowed to be left in the waiting room alone.**

What does a neuropsychological evaluation entail?

Although evaluations are individually tailored to each patient, most evaluations include three appointments: an Intake Appointment, a Testing Appointment and a Feedback Appointment.

The first meeting, the Intake Appointment, takes about an hour and a half and this is where the doctor reviews your medical history (as well as your family’s medical history) with you. He may also begin testing, depending on how much time is available.

The second meeting, the Testing Appointment, is where the bulk of the evaluation is completed. This may take up to three hours, however each case if different. Dr. Troiani can give you a better idea of how long your testing may take at the end of your Intake Appointment.

The third meeting, the Feedback Appointment, usually takes less than an hour. At this appointment, the doctor will reveal the results of your evaluation, explain what the results mean, review his recommendations and referrals, and answer all of your questions.

Following the Feedback Appointment, your referring doctor will receive an evaluation report including diagnostic impressions and recommendations. Please make the follow-up appointment with your referring doctor for at least one full week after your Feedback Appointment with Dr. Troiani (if a holiday falls within your testing timeline, it may take a little longer). This gives the doctor time write the lengthy report including notes from your last appointment.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a neuropsychologist?

A psychologist provides psychotherapy to their patients in a setting designed to help them identify, process and treat the issues they are facing.
A neuropsychologist provides an extensive, comprehensive evaluation to test the functioning of many areas of your brain. This includes evaluating memory, language and comprehension, processing speed, visual/special skills, motor skills, and more.
A neuropsychologist looks for deficits in multiple facets of your brain’s functioning in order to help your referring provider obtain a more concrete diagnosis and, therefore, develop the most effective treatment possible.

If I am taking a family member to their appointments, do I need to wait in-office for them to complete their testing or can I drop them off and return to get them later?

If you are driving someone with memory difficulties, your input may be beneficial. So, it is preferred, but not required, that you stay for the Intake and Feedback Appointments. In most cases, it is not necessary that you stay for the longer testing appointment**, which can take up to three hours. If you decide to drop off the patient, you are required to leave your cell phone number in case you need to be reached.

**Please note that if you are driving a patient under the age of 18, or a patient with severe memory issues (such as dementia), you are required stay in order to minimize anxiety/confusion.
